MHS Alumnus Returns to Speak about Toy Company
Monday, April 9, 2007
Recently, Milton Hershey School Alumnus Sterling Ashby '87 returned to the School's campus to speak to students about his new toy company, Milton Hershey's influence on his life, and entrepreneurship.
Ashby recently founded History In Action Toys (www.hiatoys.com) and just released his first series of limited-edition action figures based on real-life African American heroes: first female aviator Bessie Coleman; mathematician and astronomer Benjamin Banneker, and the first African American man to reach the North Pole, Matthew Henson.
Through these toys, Ashby hopes to educate children about the lesser-known heroes who make American history so rich and diverse. He believes so strongly in the vision behind HIA Toys, he quit his lucrative career as a corporate lawyer to focus full-time on the growth of his first toy line.
Ashby spoke to elementary, middle, and senior division students as a culminating Black History Month activity. During his sessions with students, he held trivia contests and awarded his action figures as prizes.
Recently, Milton Hershey School Alumnus Sterling Ashby '87 came back to the MHS campus to speak to students about his toy company, Milton Hershey's influence, and entrepreneurship. Fifth-graders (L-R) Elizabeth Hoover, Anna Kauffman, and Kenyah West, who happen to be the first, second, and third place winners of the grade five Martin Luther King essay contest, respectively, are pictured with Ashby and his action figures.
