Actual Private Scholarships
Various scholarship organizations send Milton Hershey School information on their awards. Copies of these notices are located at the "Scholarship Center" on the first floor of Senior Hall and are also listed below. Most private scholarship application dates range from November through May! Please carefully review the qualifications listed for each scholarship and apply to ones (before their required deadlines) that match your attributes.
American Legion - Dept. of Pennsylvania: (Early 2009 deadlines - vary)
The American Legion has four active scholarship programs: Essay Contest, Oratorical Contest, Keystone Boys State, Pennsylvania State Police Youth Week. Burger King Scholars Program: (February 2, 2009 deadline)
BURGER KING Scholars awards assist students who work part-time and excel academically. Up to 700 scholarships of $1,000 each are available to current high school seniors. Some criteria include: *Cum GPA of 2.50 or higher; *work an average of 15 hours/week; financial need; actively involved in community service activities. Hugh Carcella Memorial Scholarship Program: (March 15, 2009 deadline)
Six, 4-year scholarships, each valued at $4,000 ($1,000 per year) will be awarded in June 2009 to current high school seniors. Winners may follow any course of study normally leading to a recognized Bachelor's degree. An applicant must be a member in good standing, or the son, daughter or legal ward of a member of a United Steelworkers, District 10 (Eastern) local union participating in the Scholarship Program. Applications may be obtained, upon request, from participating local unions.
KFC Colonel's Scholars Program: (December 1, 2008 thru February 10, 2009)
KFC is awarding scholarships of $5,000 per year and in order to qualify a student must be: (1) graduating from high school between Dec 2008 and August 2009, (2) have a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA, (3) enroll in a public, in-state college with a start date no later than 9/30/09, (4) pursuing a Bachelor's degree, and (5) a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. McKELVEY FOUNDATION - Scholarships for Young Entrepreneurs: (January 25, 2009)
Andy McKelvey, former owner of Monster.com, sponsors a foundation that is offering an entrepreneurial scholarship of up to $10,000 per year for years of US college study. To qualify: (1) graduate high school in Spring 2009, (2) attend a 4-year college in the US, (3) own and operate a genuine business, and (4) have at least one paid employee.
