What are the duties and responsibilities of relief houseparents?
Relief houseparents are responsible for meal preparation; transportation to and from scheduled activities; attending student activities and events (sporting events, performing art activities, shopping); actively interacting with students in the student home (reading, homework, playing board games, outdoor activities); supervision and assistance to students as they follow the implemented chore program and play time; providing problem-solving strategies; attending chapel service on Sunday morning at 9:00 AM; greeting parents/sponsors when they arrive at the student home to pick up and return their children from off-campus visits; dispensing medications; and other duties.
Are student homes of the same gender and same age?
Yes, all student homes are single gender, and students are housed in age groups of elementary, middle, and high school homes.
What is the work schedule?
You must report to the student home by 6:00 PM Friday evening and remain at the student home until 9:30 PM Sunday evening. The normal schedule is 18 weekends per year. However, you may be contacted and offered additional time.
May we bring our own children to the student home when we work?
Up to two dependent children are permitted to accompany their parents for the weekend. You should plan for your children to participate in student home activities and eat meals with the student home members.
What are the living accommodations for relief houseparents?
Relief houseparent couples have a small efficiency apartment attached to the student home in which they are assigned.
Will we be permitted to bring our pets?
Relief houseparents are not permitted to bring pets to the student home.
What other parameters apply to this position?
No smoking, drugs, alcohol, or weapons are permitted on campus. There also are limitations to visits from guests.
May we maintain other employment jobs or venues during the weekend?
No. When you accept the position of relief houseparent, you are committing your presence and full attention to the every other weekend work schedule, reporting by 6:00 PM Friday evening and remaining until 9:30 PM Sunday.
Is the part-time weekend relief houseparent position part of a bargaining unit?
Yes, the position is a union position. The bargaining unit that represents houseparents and relief houseparents is Chocolate Workers-Local 464. Dues is determined by the union.
What is the compensation for this position?
Relief houseparent couples receive $728 per weekend and may participate in a TIAA-CREF retirement program,
What is the application process?
Since this is a residential position working with students, the application process is lengthy and thorough. Candidate couples begin the process by completing online applications. After your application is reviewed, we will contact you if you are a potential match and you will be interviewed by telephone, followed by an on-campus interview. The next step is a thorough background check that includes multiple clearances and an investigator visit to your home to meet with you and your dependents. There also is validation of truthful statements on the application, validation of education, validation of marriage, financial history check, and reference checks. Medical checks also are required, post-offer.
How will we be notified of our start date and time?
Human Resources will notify candidates of the outcome of their applications. Couples hired are then contacted by the Home Life Office to schedule two consecutive weekend orientations at the student home. Once training is completed, assignment to a schedule and a student home is provided.

As a part-time weekend relief houseparent couple, will we automatically be eligible for a full-time houseparent position?
Serving in the role of part-time weekend relief houseparent does not offer preferred status or an automatic right to a full-time position. Part-time weekend relief houseparents may apply for full-time houseparent positions if approved by their management.
