Visual & Performing Arts
R. Dale Peiffer '49 was a member of the Glee Club for four years and was the group's accompanist and frequent instrumental soloist. Dale also was a member of the School orchestra and the Spartan (Jazz) Orchestra for three of his years at MHS. He also performed in a piano duo for two years and played flute and piccolo in the marching band.
Malcom Brown '99 received a Silver Key Award for his self-portrait oil painting, Inspiration, in the National Scholastic Art Award Competition in 1999. For capturing this second-place award, he was honored during a ceremony at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. Malcolm also received the Central PA Scholastic Gold Key Award, the competition's highest honor, for the painting. In 1995, he and his brother, Jason Brown '99, won the Milton S. Hershey Stamp Poster Contest. Among his other artistic accomplishments, Malcolm was a runner-up in the 13-18 year age category of Nabisco's 100th Anniversary Edible Architecture Contest in 1998 for which he designed a multi-tiered skyscraper. He also designed MHS's 90th anniversary logo, was an artist for The Spartan Spirit School newspaper and the Acropolis yearbook, and was a member of the Art Club and the Art Collection Committee. His other arts endeavors included performing with the MHS Marching Band, Jazz Band, Varsity Choir, and New Horizons.
Jason Brown '99 collaborated with his brother, Malcolm Brown '99, in winning the Milton S. Hershey Stamp Poster Contest. He also was an artist for The Spartan Spirit School newspaper and the Acropolis yearbook, and a member of the Art Club and the Art Collection Committee. Jason's Aztec-style house won the grand prize of $10,000 in Nabisco's 100th Anniversary Edible Architecture contest in 1998 and he was named a runner-up for the Pennsylvania Child Care Association Poster contest. Jason also performed with the MHS Marching Band, Jazz Band, Varsity Choir, and New Horizons.
Clyde Stacks HM '82 dedicated his life to art and skill training for the vocational general students at MHS for 43 years. Clyde came to the School in 1939 and taught English and history before moving into art and skill training. During the war years, he served in the U.S. Army in New Cumberland as part of a special program that used art to train recruits to read and write. Upon returning to the MHS, Clyde applied the talent and experience he gained to create a special art education program that helped students understand the principles of math and science. His ability to help students find expression for feelings and latent talent is given testimony by many of his former students. Clyde's dedication to the School and devotion to his students is truly legendary. Clyde passed away in October 1988.
John Singley '46 was a member of the MHS Marching Band, Spartan Orchestra, Glee Club, and Brass Quartet and performed as an instrumental soloist throughout his MHS career. He also was with an octet and quartet, and with the School orchestra for two years. John passed away in August 2001.
Athletics
Phillipa Ashby '89 was a conference, district, and state champion in the 200-meter track event; was a four-time conference, district, and state champion in both the 100-and 400-meter event; and was a member of the 1989 state championship MHS track and field team. Phillipa also lettered twice in cross-country and basketball.
Carlton Bleiler '81 was the 1980 and 1981 district and state champion in both shotput and discus and holds distinction as the first state champion in these events in MHS history. He also was a member of two state champion track and field teams and was a district champion in wrestling, where he placed sixth in state competition in 1981. In addition, in football, Carlton was a member of the first team all-conference offense and defense in his junior and senior year, and was named to the 1980 Patriot-News All-Star team.
Tim Rupp '68 was the National High School Prep Champion in wrestling at the Lehigh University competition in 1967 and 1968.
Mike Weller '66 coached junior high, junior varsity, and varsity boys basketball for 10 years - amassing a 169 win-60 loss record. The first junior high team he coached achieved an undefeated 21-0 season. The 1980 varsity team he coached won the first District III championship in School history and in 1981, the team won the District III championship and first state championship in School history with an overall record of 27 wins and 4 losses. Mike also was honored as the Coach of the Year in Central Pennsylvania in 1981.
1980-81 Boys Basketball Team won the District III championship in 1980 and 1981 and in 1981 became the first and only MHS boys basketball team to win the state championship.
